I didn’t grow up a dancer. As a matter of fact, I was told I couldn’t dance much at all. But I did grow up moving—just not in the way people expect. As a kid, I spent hours in my room dancing and moving to the beat… alone, with just my thoughts and the rhythm.
From Controller to Confidence
Eventually, I found a new way to jam—in one of the most unlikely places: gaming. Yes, Xbox controller in hand, following beats on a screen. There was a spark in that moment. I didn’t quite know it yet, but that’s where it started. Not in a studio. Not in front of mirrors.
Just me, music, and movement that didn’t ask for perfection—just participation.

What started as a game turned into curiosity. Curiosity turned into a class.
And somewhere between “I’m just having fun” and “wait… how cool would it be if I did this?”—something shifted.
Not just physically.
Mentally.
How I Became a Zumba Instructor

I walked into this space as someone who was told she couldn’t dance. I stayed long enough to prove that wrong. Then I took it further… I became the instructor. A plus-sized woman. A coach. A business owner. Not in spite of my body… But because I decided my body was worthy of movement, joy, and space.
Zumba it wasn’t just cardio. It was release.
It’s not just calories burned. It’s confidence built. It’s not just steps and counts.
It’s the moment you stop caring who’s watching—and start feeling yourself again. You don’t need another workout... You need something you’ll actually show up for. Something that makes you forget you’re “trying to get in shape” and reminds you that you’re allowed to feel good right now. Not 10 pounds from now. Not “when you get better.”
Just once. That’s all it takes to start.
One Heck of An Origin Story

But while many of us instructors have our own origin stories… there’s one that stands above the rest. Zumba didn’t come from a boardroom. It came from a moment.
A young man from Colombia—Alberto Pérez—forgot his traditional workout music and improvised with Latin rhythms. That “mistake”? It turned into a global movement. His journey wasn’t easy. It took multiple trips from Colombia to Miami before he caught his big break.
Eventually, he connected with Alberto Perlman and Alberto Aghion, and together the three men all named, Alberto built what we now know as Zumba.
With little funding but a lot of belief, they filmed classes on a beach, created an infomercial, and sold nearly a million DVDs in just six months. And the world met Beto.

Since then, Zumba has moved millions—not because it’s perfect… but because it’s human.
You do not need rhythm. You do not need a certain body. You do not need confidence. You build that through movement. Not before it.
And 25 years later… Zumba is still here. Still evolving. Still changing lives.

More Than Just Fitness

There were moments it got hard—hard enough that I almost quit. After the pandemic, classes dwindled. I went from packed rooms to barely a handful of students… to empty ones. People couldn’t afford classes and I couldn’t afford studio rent. But that’s when something powerful happened.
Other Zumba instructors—ZINs—showed up for me. They shared opportunities, referrals, and sometimes just a listening ear.
That’s when I realized… This wasn’t just a fitness program. This was a global family.
Looking back, it's no wonder why Zumba still works after 25 years. It’s not just a brand—it’s a legacy. That’s the magic of Zumba. Sure it’s a workout that sticks to it's claim because yes it actually feels like a dance party but beyond the fun beats and lively steps, Zumba delivers so many powerful benefits that can transform your body and mind.
