In our fast-paced world, the focus on health has become more important than ever. Many studies suggest that what we eat can significantly impact our risk of developing cancer.

Some foods, particularly superfoods and herbs, are packed with nutrients that have potential cancer-fighting properties. In this post, we will explore some of my fav powerful superfoods and herbs, that can contribute to cancer prevention.


The American Cancer Society advises following the U.S. Dietary Guidelines, which is to consume at least 2½ to 3 cups of vegetables and 1½ to 2 cups of fruit each day (roughly five servings total) to reduce risk of cancer.  In an study published by Circulation, adults who consumed five servings of fruits and vegetables each day were less likely to die early – specifically, they had a lower risk of dying of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory disease.


While shopping healthy items in the grocery store is not a full-proof way to guarantee complete cancer prevention, having healthy diet couple with an active, non-sedentary lifestyle can surely help. Please consult your doctor or a licensed healthcare professional.

1. Soursop

Soursop, also known as graviola, is a tropical fruit that is not just delicious but also boasts impressive health benefits. 4. Turmeric

These tiny, mighty bacteria are like your immune system's personal bodyguards, even kicking cancer to the curb. They stick to potential carcinogens like bubblegum on a shoe and show them the exit, helping to keep colorectal cancer at bay. Not a fan of yogurt? No problem! Try the thrilling alternatives like kefir, kombucha, kimchi, or tempeh—your taste buds will thank you for the adventure!


8. Oil of Oregano

Oregano has been shown to induce oxidative stress and trigger programmed cell death that may slow cancer growth, this is called apoptosis. It is high in antioxidants, such as carvacrol and thymol, which have been shown to help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, potentially reducing the risk of chronic diseases, including cancer. Oregano also has anti-tumor and antiproliferative effects. Some test-tube studies have indicated that oregano extracts and its components may inhibit the growth of and even cause the death of certain cancer cells. Specifically, studies have shown effects against colon cancer, lung cancer, liver cancer, and breast cancer cells. Oregano extract (apoptosis) in some cancer cell lines. Carvacrol has been found to reduce proliferation and viability of breast cancer cells and to enhance the effects of chemotherapy drugs like tamoxifen and doxorubicin.

Animal Studies: In a breast cancer model, rats who received oregano concentrate in their diets showed a reduction in tumor frequency and volume. 

9. Fish

Fatty fish — such as salmon, tuna, and herring — contain omega-3 fatty acids, a type of fatty acid that has been linked to a reduced risk of prostate cancer. If you don’t currently eat fish, you might consider adding it to your anti-cancer diet. I understand that some diets and lifestyles may not make this possible for some but that doesn't mean that you are out of luck. Another way to add omega-3s to your diet is by eating flaxseed or chia seeds or spirulina.


Here are some of the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids

  • Reduced Risk of Specific Cancers: Studies suggest a potential link between higher omega-3 intake and a reduced risk of certain cancers, including colon, stomach, lung, liver, and breast cancers.

  • Modulating Inflammation: Omega-3s may help reduce the chronic inflammation associated with cancer development.

  • Inhibiting Cancer Cell Growth: Research suggests omega-3s can slow cancer cell growth and division, as well as inhibit the formation of new blood vessels needed for tumor growth.

  • Improving Cancer Treatment Outcomes: Studies indicate that omega-3 supplementation alongside conventional therapies may improve outcomes for some cancer patients.

  • Reducing Treatment Side Effects: Omega-3s may help alleviate some side effects of chemotherapy and radiation, including cancer-related fatigue, inflammation, and heart-related issues.

  • Fighting Cancer-Related Complications: Omega-3s may aid in managing complications like anorexia-cachexia syndrome (weight loss and muscle wasting), pain, and depression associated with cancer.


10. Spirulina

Spirulina, a type of blue-green algae, has shown potential anticancer effects in various studies, both in vitro and in vivo. Research suggests it can inhibit cancer cell growth, induce cell death (apoptosis and autophagy), and modulate the immune system to fight cancer. Spirulina has also been shown to reduce myelosuppression and improves immune function after chemotherapy in patients with malignant tumors.
